Vietnam extended visa-free entry to Australian passport holders in 2023, making Phu Quoc one of the most accessible and rewarding Southeast Asian golf destinations for Australian golfers. With connections via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Ho Chi Minh City, the total journey is comparable to flying to Europe, but you arrive somewhere genuinely tropical — two championship courses, warm clear water, and some of the best seafood in Southeast Asia.
Getting to Phu Quoc from Australia
The most convenient routings from Australian cities are:
- Via Singapore (SIN) — Qantas, Singapore Airlines and Jetstar serve Singapore from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and other capitals. From Singapore, Scoot and VietJet operate direct flights to Phu Quoc (PQC) in under 2 hours. Total journey: 10–12 hours depending on your Australian departure city. Singapore makes an excellent stopover.
- Via Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) — Vietnam Airlines flies direct from Sydney and Melbourne to Ho Chi Minh City (~9 hours), with short connecting flights to Phu Quoc throughout the day (1 hour). Great option if you want to explore Vietnam's south before the island.
- Via Kuala Lumpur (KUL) — AirAsia connects multiple Australian cities to KL, with onward connections to Phu Quoc via Ho Chi Minh. Budget-friendly option for flexible travellers.
Visa Information for Australian Travellers
Australian passport holders are eligible for visa-free entry to Vietnam for stays of up to 45 days (as of 2023). No advance application, e-visa or fee is required for tourism visits including golf. Simply arrive at Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) with your valid Australian passport. If you plan to stay longer than 45 days or make multiple visits, Vietnam's e-visa is available for 90-day stays.
